The 10 vital rules for electricians

Being an electrician requires various technical and manual skills, as well as a high attention span and the ability to resolve any problem that arises as best as possible at any time.
However, we must not underestimate the safety factor and the numerous risks to which we expose ourselves on a daily basis, from accidents at work to the possible involuntary damage that can be caused to your customers. Technicians assigned to the monitoring, maintenance and repair of electrical systems in many cases tend to underestimate the dangers associated with this area. However, even the most expert electricians, given their practicality in working, can be subject to distractions and injuries.

The risks are unpredictable but the right precautions can still be taken to try to limit the damage. To avoid having to affect your assets and compromise the continuity of your business here 10 tips to follow to cultivate the electrician business safely:

• Defined responsibility:
The tasks to be carried out must be assigned in writing and precisely to try to avoid misunderstandings and improve safety and efficiency. In order for the tasks to be entrusted to suitable workers, it is advisable to draw up a table with the main points and assign the tasks intelligently according to the skills of each employee. Furthermore, the superior must always underline that work carried out under tension can only be carried out in pairs and only by suitable and specially trained people. At the same time, the worker, in case of imprecise tasks or missing documents, must stop work and contact his superior.

• Employ suitable personnel:
Work on electrical systems requires maximum concentration. For this reason, workers must have, for each job, the training necessary to satisfy certain physical and mental requirements. The employer must therefore employ only qualified personnel. Workers, in fact, must strictly carry out only the jobs for which they have been trained and authorised.

• Use work equipment in perfect condition:
Working with suitable and intact equipment is essential. Before starting to use a specialized instrument it is important to check that it has been maintained, that it is suitable and insulated, and that it practically does not present any damage or defects.

• Use personal protective equipment (PPE):
For each task and at all times, superiors and employees must use the Personal Protective Equipment necessary for the activity to be carried out, such as dielectric gloves.

• Only operate verified systems:
After every major modification and expansion of an electrical system, it is necessary to check, before commissioning, whether the protection of people and things is guaranteed. This verification includes inspections, (functional) tests and measurements. The checks must be carried out immediately after the completion of the works and documented.

Furthermore, in the absence of voltage it is advisable:

• Disconnect the electrical system;
• Secure the system, preventing accidental reinsertion;
• Check the absence of voltage;
• Ground and short-circuit;
• Protect yourself from nearby live elements.

However, following the rules is sometimes not enough, unexpected events can happen when you least expect them. This is why it is essential to protect yourself with adequate and tailor-made coverage for each electrician.
Insurance for Electricians covers the professional from claims for compensation from third parties and their employees thanks to the Civil Liability policy, and also protects the business owner in the event of damage to the places where the work is carried out or in the event of theft of specialized tools with Damage to Property and Contents coverage.
