Electrician: the Risks of the Trade
The work of Electrician is one of the most risky and complex professions. The tasks to be carried out require different technical and manual skills, a high attention span and good problem solving skills. Being in continuous and direct contact with electrical cables for the installation and maintenance of systems, this profession is exposed to the risk of injuries, whether temporary or permanent, on a daily basis. The most common accidents often occur among apprentices and new electricians, particularly when working on distribution systems, low voltage systems and utilities.
The 5 vital rules
Accidents, more or less serious, often occur due to the failure or incorrect application of the five vital rules and safety standards that electricians must follow. These are rules that must always be applied when working with electricity. In fact, superiors and collaborators must reserve the time necessary to apply and check that everyone follows the rules during working hours. The 5 vital rules I am:
- Assign specific tasks
- Employ suitable personnel
- Use work equipment in perfect condition
- Use protective devices
- Only operate verified systems
Between other rules instead they include:
- Disconnect and section from all sides
- Take necessary measures to prevent reintegration
- Check the absence of voltage
- Ground and short circuit
- Protect yourself from nearby live elements
If these few but fundamental rules are not followed to the letter Dramatic situations can arise, to say the least.
A case that had shocked the whole of Italy was that of the young 25-year-old electrician Andrea, who died this year while carrying out his work as an electrician in the Vicenza area. Husband and father of a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, he fell from a ladder while carrying out maintenance work in a company in Tezze sul Brenta.
Or again, Gianni, the 51-year-old who was electrocuted in July while he was working on an electrical system in the Lecce area, who died on the spot probably due to failure to make the workplace safe.
This is how today, often due to lack of attention, training, use of right Personal Protective Equipment and adoption of accident prevention procedures, hundreds of workers lose their lives.
This is why it is essential to protect yourself and your family with adequate and tailor-made coverage for those who carry out this profession.
