What is the difference between quick and complete formatting

When formatting a hard drive, USB stick, or another storage medium in Windows 10, 8, or 7, users have the option to choose between quick formatting (which essentially clears the content) or complete formatting. For many beginner users, understanding the difference between these two options and knowing when to use each can be confusing. This guide explains the distinctions between quick and complete formatting for hard drives and USB drives, as well as recommendations on which formatting method to use depending on specific scenarios. Additionally, it includes insights into formatting options for SSDs. Note: The information provided applies to formatting in Windows 7 through Windows 10. It’s worth mentioning that certain complete formatting features may function differently in Windows XP.

The difference between quick and complete formatting

To understand the difference between quick and complete formatting in Windows, we must know, what happens in each of the cases. I want to specify that this is formatting with tools incorporated in the Windows operating system, such as:

  • Formatting in Explorer (Click with the right button on the disk in Explorer – Puck in the context menu «Formatting»).

What is the difference between quick and complete formatting

  • Formatting in Windows «Disco Management» (right click – «Formatting»).

What is the difference between quick and complete formatting

  • The control format in Diskpart (for the quick scan in the order line, the quick parameter is used, as in the screen. Without this parameter complete formatting is performed).

What is the difference between quick and complete formatting

  • In the Windows installation program.

Now let’s move on to quick and complete formatting and what happens with the disc or attacking in each of the variants.

  • Quick formatting – In this case per unit, the loading sector and the empty table of the selected file system (FAT32, NTFS, Exfam) are written. Disk space is marked as unused without eliminating data on it. Quick formatting takes less time (hundreds of mi-mi) than complete formatting.
  • Complete formatting -Deiing of the complete formatting of the disc or USB disk in addition to the actions mentioned above, the writing of Zeros (i.e.) in all sectors of the disc (starting from Windows Vista) is also performed and the storage environment is verified for the presence of defective sectors if they are corrected or marked correctly to avoid writing in the future. In fact, it takes longer, especially for HDD with high capacity.

In most cases for ordinary pregnancies: rapid cleaning of the disc for subsequent use, during the reinstallation of the windows and in other similar situations, quick formatting is sufficient. Although in some cases complete formatting may be useful.

Quick and complete formatting – which and when to use

As mentioned above, usually better and faster to use quick formatting, only that there may be exceptions, when complete formatting can be more useful. The next two points for HDD and USB sticks, on SSD immediately after.

  • If you intend to give someone’s record and at the same time you take care of the probability, that a foreign person can recover the data on him, better to perform complete formatting. The files after quick formatting are recovered quite easily, see, for example, recover – recovery of deleted or lost files.
  • If the disk control is needed, when during quick formatting (for example, during the installation of Windows) the subsequent copy of the files with errors is performed, announcing that the disc can contain defective sectors. However, it is possible to manually check the disc for the presence of defective sectors and only after using quick formatting: check the hard drive in Windows.

Ssd formatting

For SSD in all cases it is better to use quick formatting, not the complete one:

  • If you do it on a modern operating system, the data after rapid formatting on the ASD cannot be restored (starting from Windows 7, for SSD during formatting the trim command is used).
  • Complete formatting and zero writing can be dangerous for SSD. Although, I’m not sure, that Windows 10-7 will do it on an SSD even if you choose the complete format (unfortunately, I have not found concrete information for this topic, but there are reasons to believe that this is taken into consideration).

I think I have reached all the answers in this article: I hope, for some users this information will be useful. If you have questions, you can ask them in this article.
